ALBERTO TOMBA
Saturday evening, the 15th of Fabruary 1997, as you know very well, the Sestriere's World
Championship '97 ended with a great medal of our great Alberto Tomba. I was there to side
with him together with other 30000 persons, that had come there to see his medal (the total
number of people was 35000). Our great champion, in spite of all the pressures upon him
and all the problems he had in this year, didn't disappoint all his fans. And it is just
in these events that we can see the myth, the legend, the real champion: while the clever
and favourite Austrians Thomas Sykora, Mario Reiter e Thomas Stangassinger dissolved under
the weight of the responsibility and they won not even a medal (they were sure to win the
gold medal), our hero added another pearl to his already rich palmares, taking part in a
splendid second run, in spite of the fever. And also with Amiez we can see the difference
between the clever athlete and the champion: in fact Amiez proved not to be winner, loosing
all his very great advantage accumulated in the first run. The atmosphere, when He went
down, was almost unreal, there was a single rumble that wrapped up the run pushing him
towards another medal. Let's see now what the press says about Him:

"Tomba on the dais, half miracle."
"The ancient hero."
"The Italian, with the fever, misses the first run in the slalom, but rises again in the
second one, winning a medal."
"TOMBA, the pride broze."
"He didn't want to retire in respect towards his fans, touching on the miracle."
"The champion: tired and ill, but it was not right to give up."

We say: "Thank you Alberto. Give us some more emotions!"
